THE CRYSTAL LABEIJA MONUMENT INITIATIVE LAUNCH PARTY CELEBRATED CRYSTAL’S LEGACY WITH POWERFUL PRESENTATIONS AND A VIBRANT COMMUNITY KICKOFF. DISCOVER THE HIGHLIGHTS AND JOIN THE MOVEMENT

On December 12th, the Royal House of LaBeija and the Accessories Council Magazine family came together in the heart of the Garment District to celebrate the monumental legacy of Crystal LaBeija. Set within the chic, intimate space of a converted loft, the evening marked the official launch of The Crystal LaBeija Monument Initiative—a visionary tribute to the first lady of ballroom and a groundbreaking cultural pioneer.

As guests filled the space, the energy was electric. From the stunning bronze bust of Crystal on display to the vibrant atmosphere created by LaBeija members and supporters, every detail reflected the elegance, resilience, and vibrancy that Crystal embodied.

Presentations that Left a Lasting Impact
The event featured four captivating presentations, each offering a unique perspective on Crystal’s legacy and the initiative’s significance:

Father Marcus LaBeija, the evening’s host, opened with a powerful and heartfelt overview of the initiative, sharing plans for a year-long celebration that will culminate in the unveiling of Crystal’s monument at the Museum of the City of New York in April 2025. Father Marcus outlined the upcoming events that will serve as both tributes to Crystal and opportunities to highlight ballroom’s influence on culture and history.

Sculptor Julian Prairie, the sculptor behind Crystal’s bronze bust, offered a glimpse into his artistic process. With his prior experience crafting the Marsha P. Johnson sculpture, which has been officially recognized by the City of New York, Julian brought a wealth of expertise to this project. He spoke passionately about the care and intention poured into capturing Crystal’s likeness and the symbolism behind her powerful presence.

Overall Overseer Jeffrey LaBeija transported the audience to the early 1970s, painting a vivid picture of the cultural landscape that fostered the birth of the Harlem ballroom scene. Jeffrey’s reflections highlighted the societal inequities and fierce resilience of the LGBTQ+ community that shaped a space of self-expression, family, and liberation—one that Crystal LaBeija helped to define.

Icon John Smith Kansai Moschino Infinity, a retired ballroom Icon with 45 years of experience walking balls, shared an emotional and heartfelt testimony. John reflected on his personal relationship with Crystal, emphasizing her integrity and leadership, which left an indelible mark on his life. He celebrated her legacy as a guiding force of dignity, fairness, and individuality—values that continue to resonate deeply in ballroom today, 50 years later.

A Community United in Celebration
The evening was as much about community as it was about Crystal. LaBeija members from across the country stood shoulder-to-shoulder with brand partners, collaborators, and allies. The event was a vivid reminder of the strength and beauty of chosen family and the enduring impact of Crystal’s legacy on LGBTQ+ communities worldwide.

Guests enjoyed an incredible spread of food and drinks prepared by members of the LaBeija family, as they mingled, shared stories, and celebrated a movement that goes beyond remembrance to inspire future generations.

Looking Ahead
The launch party was just the beginning of this monumental journey. The Crystal LaBeija Monument Initiative is more than a tribute—it’s a living legacy, a call to honor history, amplify voices, and ensure that Crystal’s pioneering spirit continues to illuminate the path forward.
